The dog waited by the door for his owner to come home. With nervous anticipation, he tugged at the couch cushion and waited. He paced the floor nervously, chewing mindlessly on little objects in the room. His owner walked down the hall. He recognized the walk. The key started turning in the door. The dog was so excited he urinated on the floor, by the door. The owner walked in. The dog leaped up in excitement. The owner saw the pee and the mess in the home. The owner yelled at the dog. The dog cowered. He hung his head down and slinked to the corner, feeling bad about his behavior.

She put the dog outside and he barked and scratched at the door, trying to get back in. He gnawed at the door frame until she worried that he would break it. When she let him in, he threw himself at her. Seeking for attention, he barked and yapped at his owner. She then put him back outside.

The dog waited by the door for his owner to arrive. He waited patiently. He slept off and on as he waited. Occasionally a bird flew by and he would entertain himself by barking at the bird. As time drew closer, he began to feel excitement building up. His owner walked in and he smothered her with licks to her face. He pawed her body. She pushed him away. He followed her around the house pawing, licking, and whining. She repeatedly pushed him away.

When she sat down, he tried to sit on her lap. If she pushed him off. He whined and pawed at her feet. He attempted to jump up and lick her whenever he could. She distanced herself from the dog, finally locking him outside in the yard. She loved her dog, but sometimes he was just too much.

The dog waited patiently. He missed his owner. He amused himself with patrolling the house, barking at squirls, and taking naps. He waited patiently for his owner. When she arrived, he snuggled up next to her. He was a calming presence and his owner felt calm being around him. After a long day, she sought out his company. He would lie quietly next to her and she would offer up love and attention. When she moved around the house, he gave her the space she needed to move freely. When she was ready to relax again, he was right there with her, relaxing too. They gave each other companionship. Neither one smothering the other. Neither one distancing themselves from the other. Each one seeking the calm soothing companionship of the other.
